Our client, one of London’s largest NHS Trusts, wanted to identify its legal spend – how much, with whom, where budgets sat, which advisory areas were covered – and to bring suppliers in line with legal services procurement practices previously agreed between the Trust and a panel of suppliers.
Through a series of focused workshops with stakeholders and detailed analysis of the purchase ledger we identified multi-million £ cross-advisory area legal spend, significantly more than the Trust anticipated. More telling, approximately half of this spend was “off” agreed rates. We identified significant opportunities to claw-back sums overpaid by the Trust to suppliers, tactically helping the Trust’s dedicated procurement team to negotiate with suppliers, obtain credits and mandate correct procurement practices going forward. We also worked with stakeholders to better rationalise the Trust’s existing panel of firms, capturing further volume discounts by focussing spend on a handful of trusted suppliers.
